YOUR COUNSELLING SESSION

How I Work as a Counsellor in Oatley and Newtown

Philosophy of Counselling and Personal Growth

You can't avoid what life throws your way, and you can't erase the past. What you can do is work to recover from your painful life experiences.

Based on my personal experience and the clients that I've worked with, I know therapy can help you resolve your pain and struggles. Therapy is often the only way to overcome deep-seated troublesome issues.

I'm a compassionate and skilled therapist who focuses on building a strong and caring relationship with you. It is through the quality of our relationship in which deep healing will occur.

Problems that have been difficult to overcome are often due to unconscious deeply-rooted patterns of feeling, thinking, and behaving.

Without the help of a warm and skilled therapist that you feel safe with, it is often not possible to get to the root of your struggles in order to heal them.

The pain you have now can be transformed into "gold," leading to freedom and joy. Therapy can help your essence shine. You will feel better about yourself and will be more attractive to others.

My Counselling Style

In our work together, I help you move from the "story" that you tell yourself into your feelings, body, and heart. This is where the root of your problems lie, and the place we work from in order to solve them.

I offer a non-judgmental approach and a calming presence, which gives you room to reveal your deepest feelings.

I help you develop new ways of thinking and being in the world. I then support you in taking risks to make changes that enable you to feel lighter and develop a more loving relationship with yourself..

I'm committed to you and your growth for the long haul

I will be with you when you make progress and moments of discouragement. Whatever it takes, I will be there for you as you make the transformation that will allow you to reach the goals you want for yourself.

Counselling Approaches

Gestalt Therapy

My main approach is rooted in Gestalt therapy. I'm the only trained Gestalt Therapist in the             St. George area and Sutherland Shire, and one of the few Gestalt therapists in Newtown and Oatley.

Gestalt is a holistic and experiential therapy that focuses on deepening your awareness by focusing on your present experience, including your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviors.

The therapeutic relationship is foundational to Gestalt therapy, as is through relationships with me where growth and healing occur. Emphasis is placed on your connection to yourself, to me as your therapist, and to others in your world.

It is through your relationships that you define how you feel about yourself and how you want to be now and in your future.

As you get in touch with parts of yourself that have been rejected or pushed away, you'll feel more whole, energised, and alive.

You'll be able to make better life choices as you improve your overall wellbeing.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a useful tool that I sometimes use in conjunction with Gestalt therapy if clients are comfortable using it.

Art therapy helps you get in touch with and express feelings that may be lurking under the surface. It is a gateway to your inner world as it bypasses your rational mind and taps into the deeper layers of your feelings and thoughts.

Like Gestalt therapy, the relationship between you and I is of utmost importance during the process. Art therapy helps to build trust between you and I. Trust is essential to our relationship as you need to feel safe and secure so that you can do the work that you need to do to heal.

Sometimes, it is easier to express yourself with art than it is to reveal parts of yourself in words. This is especially true for feelings and thoughts that you may be difficult to articulate in words.

I use crayons and paper for the most part when doing Art therapy. In groups I often use a range of materials such as paints, glue, glitter, feathers, paper, and clay.

Art therapy has nothing to do with how skilled you are in art; it is about the content you create and what it means to you.

Art therapy provides emotional release and healing leading to greater self-discovery, self-esteem, and self-confidence. It helps you let go of the past creating more freedom to be who you uniquely are.

“One of the highlights of the Hope and Heal retreat was Carmel's art therapy session. Carmel’s empathy and gentleness put the women at ease and deepened trust, which only a skilled therapist can do.
A lot of the women reported that the retreat was life-changing.
They experienced 'light bulb aha moments' and for many it was a turning point of hope. Thank you for empowering these women who have been through so much.”
Nadine Taylor,  Founder, Hope and Heal Charity for women who have experienced domestic violence.

Getting Started

We begin therapy by taking a history of your problems and review your overall emotional and physical health. I'll explain how I work and how we'll work together to achieve your goals.

Ideally, we meet weekly to ensure you have the momentum to achieve the changes you want to make. We'll evaluate your progress each week and re-evaluate our process and goals if needed.

I am flexible and understanding. The bottom line is it is your therapy, and you make the decisions of what you want to get out of our time together.

If you resonate with me and my approach, contact me for a free, no-obligation, 15-minute phone call. You can tell me your problems and I will let you know how I can help.

If we decide to work together, we'll book a therapy session in my Oatley or Newtown office or via video conference.
